While skiing with James the other day he went off through the trees as usual. I lost site of him and went down the slope a bit. When I finally saw part of him, it was just his helmet and nothing else. I assumed he was in a bit of a low spot. He yelled that he needed help which he never does so I went over to help him. When I got there, he was in a hole that went about 7 to 8 feet down to a small creek. I pulled James out but his skis were down the hole. I was able to get one of them out by hand, but the other was about 5 feet down the hole. I used my ski pole to catch one of the brakes on the ski and get it lodged in the snow so it didn't fall down into the water. As I was pulling James out a ski patrol snowmobile was heading up the hill and I flagged it down. The two guys on it helped me retrieve the ski. One guy slithered down the hole while we held his boots. he grabbed the ski and we pulled him back up ski in hand. He confirmed that the hole had water at the bottom. Thankfully, James did go much further down the hole and all his gear was retrieved.
